| I <3 Google; so many great services. To be honest, I bet incorporating the ODP makes Google Search a better tool, but could the close association with the ODP make a great company seem ethically backwards? Could "Google Directory" being ODP convey a self-interest-only image to critics? I hope not. Google is too nice of a company. The ODP operation is at least partially corrupt. |

Hi hypnoticvibe,
I like Google and mainly use it for most of my web searches. But Google is far from being the most ethical company even though thats what they say they are "don't do evil". anyway I'm not gonna get into the unrelated details about Google. To replay to your implications that ODP makes Google a better search tool is not true at all. Google tried to use the website titles as Dmoz list them, but was faced with a storm of criticism and they stopped. many companies offer a NOODP meta tag to tell search engines not to use their DMOZ title when they list their website. This clearly shows the contempt that people hold against Dmoz.
Google had the "Google directory" which is a copy of Dmoz but complimented with the google pagerank of each of those websites one click away from the main page, but then moved it 2 clicks deeper. This directory was helpful not as a search resource but to some webmasters and SEO companies who usually like to check fluctuations in pagerank that seemed to most time show at the directory level before it goes live in the toolbar.
Dmoz actually makes Google worse. and if Google were to adopt it more into their search results and keep treating it as an honest resource, I can safely bet that the same contempt will be leveled at Google as well and webmasters will join in promoting other major search engines.
Anyway, I hope Google just takes this directory totally off of their website, and ZERO's the pagerank of Dmoz, then webmasters will not give it a second look.
By the way their is a great project in the works that seems to tackle and solve most the problems with DMOZ, especially webmaster's frustrations. I have been exposed to it by its owner and loved what I've seen so far. I will post a link or a banner on this website when the website goes live (very soon I hope).
Regards,
Joe |
